Naturopathic doctors receive medical school training in not only pharmaceutical medicine, but in botanical medicine, nutrition, homeopathy, mind/body medicine, Chinese medicine, physical medicine (ie manipulation), intravenous therapy, and in some cases minor surgery and midwifery.
Naturopathic doctors working in licensed states can practice these modalities in full under a doctor-patient relationship. Naturopathic doctors working in pre-licensed states work instead in a consultant – client relationship, and instead of diagnosing and treating, provide education and guidance to help clients get optimal outcomes as they work with their treating physicians and learn to take better care of themselves as well.
